Important review to take your AHT test!

Safeguarding Liberty: The Constitution and Citizens Militias
Published in Paperback by Legacy Communications (May, 1995)
Authors: Larry Pratt and James Pratt
Average review score:

Safeguarding freedom with the Second Amendment.
This book is a collection of 15 essays on the constitutional rights associated with the Second Amendment. Larry Pratt, Executive Director of Gun Owners of America has assembled a collection of writings for Americans who are concerned with the erosion of their basic civil liberties, providing a historic background on how these fundamental rights can be protected from an ever-increasing government. This book is a welcomed addition to Larry Pratt's 1990 little jewel, Armed People Victorious, that recounts the stories of how two countries as dissimilar as Guatemala and the Philippines, teetering on the brink of disaster, turned defeat into victory when the governments recognized that allowing and encouraging the people to form armed militia to protect themselves, their families, and their villages from communist insurgents in the 1980s helped to preserve their freedom.

Safeguarding Liberty will point out the relevancy of the Second Amendment in modern society. This volume should be perused by concerned citizens who abhor violence and crime, and cherish the freedom enshrined in the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Wonderful nature book for children!
I definitely recommend this book! It works on many different levels, and you will page through it many times, discovering new surprises with each reading. Kristin's latest book is a fascinating account of how keen observations of Nature can lead to a deeper appreciation. This book is vividly illustrated and describes a journal-making process that is valuable to any teacher or child. A great addition to any Nature-lover's bookshelf!

Satellite Communications
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (October, 2002)
Authors: Timothy Pratt, Charles W. Bostian, and Jeremy E. Allnutt

Great for a beginner
I read this book as a reference rather than a formal class textbook. As a self-studying student, the first book I bought to study satellite communications was the famouns 'Digital Satellite Communications' ritten by Dr. Tri t. Ha. It is actually a quite good book. However it was just too much for a eginner. Too much mathmatical fomulars and too less literatual explanation for a new concept. It took 8 months to read just one third of the book during my militarry service. Since I have been assigned to a digital satellite earthstation construction project recently, I needed a new book that explains more practically and easilly. This 'Satellite Communications' by Dr. Timothy Pratt and Dr. Charles W. Bostian.

To cover allmost all area of the satellite communications, the overall composition is simillar to other books. At charper 3, 'SPACECRAFT', I could find fine explanation on the satellite beam and coverage. Especially, this helps me with understanding and analyzing the SRS-CDROM data. This is really great for me. Some basic and important concepts like Noise, C/N and G/T are very well descibed in chapter 4, 'SATELLITE LINK DESIGN'. Freankly, most books tend to jump to mathmatical method to explain concepts. The author spared more pages to explain the concept and the physical meaning of the terminology. I know this is a very eficient and simple way to show the existing and potential meaning of terminology. But there are hundreds of good reasons to have this kind of kind book for a slowly understanding engineer like me. :-) At chapter 5 and 6 to explain the modulation, multiplexing and multiple access, there are less fomulas and more tables and graphs. First, I read over those two chapters and went back to Dr. Ha's book above to learn the mathmatical expression. That's how you can expand the concept to individual field applications. The 'Design of Large Antennas' in chapter 9, 'EARTH STATION TECHNOLOGY' was helpful for me, too. It is pretty hard to find propper information about large antennas ahtough you have to face a bunch of confusing terminologies when you visit antenna company web sites like Vertex, RSI (recently merged to Vertex to make VertexRSI), or Datron.

I believe the combination of this ook, 'Satellite Communications' and 'Digital Satellite Communications' will give you almost all knowledge you need from fundamental to practical level in satellite communications engineering field.

The Story of the House of Wooden Santas

Can I Live There too....
I bought a copy of this absolutely delightful book for my 6-year old son not having seen or heard of it before but because it was a Mr. Christie award winner and that was good enough for me. I thought an advent book would be yet another lovely way to celebrate the coming of Christmas. This book charmed and captivated me from the start. The story suceeded in every way to earn and hold my interest ( I found myself reading the entire book at 1 a.m. not wanting to put it down) and the ending, while comforting and endearing, has its own twist of intrigue which elevates the story beyond the merely Christmas and sentimental. I can't wait for December 1 to start reading it to my son! I enjoyed this book so much that I wanted to bring it into my extended family as a new Christmas reading tradition, so I overspent my budget and bought a copy for my two nephews which I plan to give them as an early Christmas present. Now where to find Imelda George so that I can buy one of her wooden Santas. She is an amazing artist and I want one of her Santas! She literally carves the depth and glow into the story - each Santa is a visual delight and collectively - well you have to just see for yourself!

The tea lover's treasury
Published in Unknown Binding by 101 Productions ()
Author: James Norwood Pratt
Average review score:

Very Informative Tea Book
I read this book cover to cover and found it to be a GREAT tea book! Although it covers a broad range of tea topics, it covers each of them very well. I usually don't like history but found the author's descriptions and stories of what happened long ago fascinating. I have re-read them many times, each time learning somethings new. Mr. Pratt provides a Chronology of Tea Fortunes in the back of the book which is an extremely valuable reference, helping me keep track of what happened when. The author covers many other tea subjects, too, including types of tea, tea trade, tea things, etc. but doesn't use recipes to fill up the pages. It is all very informative. The only thing that could have made the book better is a more up-to-date reference list in the back. Most of the books listed here are out of print.

I have also read the New Tea Lover's Treasury by the same author but found the "old" one to be a better value. There isn't much additional information in the new book and a lot of good stuff in the old version was omitted. For example, the chronology (historic time line) is completely omitted as is the coverage of the tea trade. The Bibliography of Tea Books in the new edition is more extensive, but here again most of the books listed are out of print.

A Teacher's Guide to a Fly in the Sky: Lesson Plans for the Book a Fly in the Sky (Teacher's Guide)
Published in Paperback by Dawn Pubns (May, 1998)
Authors: Bruce Malnor, Carol Malnor, and Kristin Joy Pratt
Average review score:

very thorough resource guide
All of the Dawn teacher guides by the Malnors are superior resources. They are very well-organized and easy to follow. There are enough activities suggested to be very selective and still have more than enough material. Plus, what I love about these guides, is that all modes of learning are addressed: for example, the body and the feelings as well as the intellect. An understanding of multiple intelligences is clear in these teaching guides.
